2000–01 Serie A

In the 2000-01 season, Serie A, the major football Italian professional league, was composed by 18 teams, for the 13th consecutive time from season 1988-89.

The first two teams qualified directly to UEFA Champions League, teams ending in the 3rd and 4th places had to play Champions League qualifications, teams ending in the 5th and 6th places qualified to UEFA Cup (another spot was given to the winners of Coppa Italia), while the last four teams were to be relegated in Serie B.

A.S. Roma won its first Scudetto since the 1982/1983 season, its 3rd title overall. Juventus FC finished second, while S.S. Lazio and A.C. Parma both got to the pre-qualifying round of the same competition. Inter Milan, A.C. Milan and A.C. Fiorentina (as winners in the Coppa Italia) gained entry to the 2001/02 UEFA Cup. Brescia gained entry into the UEFA Inter-Toto Cup.

Reggina Calcio, Vicenza Calcio, S.S.C. Napoli and A.S. Bari were relegated to Serie B.

Rule changes

In the middle of the 2000–01 season, the old quota system was abolished, which no longer limited each team to having more than 5 non-EU player and using no more than 3 in each match.[1][2] Concurrent with the abolishment of the quota, FIGC had investigated footballers that used fake passports. Alberto and Warley, Alejandro Da Silva and Jorginho Paulista of Udinese,[3] Fábio Júnior and Gustavo Bartelt of Roma,[4] Dida of Milan, Álvaro Recoba of Inter, Thomas Job, Francis Zé, Jean Ondoa of Sampdoria, Jeda and Dede of Vicenza were banned in July 2001, for 6 months to 1 year.[5] However, most of the bans were subsequently reduced.
